What is CodeSignal?

CodeSignal is a technical interview solution. According to the vendor, companies of all sizes already use CodeSignal’s Pre-Screen and Interview products to tap into underrepresented pools of candidates, increase speed-to-hire, and increase candidate pipeline yield. Studies have shown that companies who use pre-hire screenings see turnover rates reduce by 39%.

CodeSignal uses technology to predict a candidate’s interview performance. CodeSignal’s predictive assessments go beyond testing only for data structures and algorithms, instead they dive deep into subject-specific assessments. Assessments on CodeSignal’s platform support 38+ programming languages, provides an advanced real-world coding environment, coding scores, and utilize a proprietary AI-powered plagiarism check.

Overview of CodeSignal Features

CodeSignal offers tests in 38+ programming languages in a real life coding environment. Per the vendor, their platform is a “flight simulator for developers” that allows candidates to utilize familiar tools to edit, run and debug their code.

CodeSignal offers keystroke playback and an automated plagiarism checker. The ability to play back the candidate’s keystrokes means that their work can be evaluated by multiple members of the hiring team without the hassle of everyone attending the assessment live. Their AI plagiarism checker searches for suspicious results, such as similarities in candidate responses.

CodeSignal’s assessments can assist companies looking to diversify their teams. Companies can replace a resume screen, and the unconscious bias it may bring, with a coding assessment. Using assessment scores allow them companies to evaluate candidates purely on skill rather than any other factor.

Coding Tests

CodeSignal divides different coding tests up into unit test frameworks that assess a person’s technical skills. Examples of unit test frameworks include:

  • NUnit for .NET Framework

  • xUnit or NUnit for .NET Core

  • JUnit for Java

  • Mocha/Chai for JavaScript

  • PHPUnit for PHP

  • unittest for Python

  • RSpec for Ruby

  • UI tests using Galen

  • UI functionality tests using Puppeteer

Assessments can be set to run in a specific language, or can be language agnostic so that the candidate can complete the test in their preferred language.

Testing job-specific skills allow for companies to pre-screen based on candidate skills and helps to improve the interview to hire ratio, since only qualified candidates will be offered interviews.

Coding Interviews

Companies can use CodeSignal for more than just their screening assessments, as the platform also allows for coding interviews and whiteboard sessions. CodeSignal’s coding interview options are suitable for in-person or virtual interviews. Companies can choose interview tasks from a pre-existing library, or can easily import custom tasks from GitHub.

Using CodeSignal’s interview tool, companies can see how candidates interact with the tools they will use every day on the job and make more informed hiring decisions. Team members can interact with the candidate to evaluate their approach to solving problems.

It simulates the actual online coding assessment from different companies, which helps alot in interview preparation
  • code completion
  • innovative problems
  • coding assessment
  • Curated list
  • Resembles actual coding environment
  • More coding assessments
  • tutorials to solve the problems
  • Company wise interview questions
I like the general assessment which helped me clear and be able to assess the situation and make more precise decisions.

As an aspiring software engineer, I have used CodeSignal over the past several months to help me prepare for technical interviews which evaluate my technical problem-solving skills. I have also used CodeSignal to complete technical challenges for various companies to help them make decisions regarding my candidacy. In particular, I have utilized the "interview practice" section extensively to prepare for particular areas where I require improvement.
  • Variety of questions separated reasonably into different categories.
  • Organized and useful courses.
  • Clean and easy-to-use online code editor.
  • CodeSignal homepage can be difficult to use; the "recommended next task" isn't always useful or optimal.
  • A hidden dropdown menu underneath the brand logo can be hard to find; I had difficulty finding the "interview practice" button. Would be preferred to keep it on the top bar where "my profile", "test center" etc are.
  • I don't believe that the CodeSignal currency is useful; it seems to be an unnecessary distraction.
Useful when one needs to provide a technical screening to a recruiter, or when one wants a quick practice in a particular area such as Dynamic Programming or backtracking. It is less useful in general practice cases, when one wants to engage or participate in discussions regarding the problem, when one wants to practice problems that are commonly given by a particular company, or when one wants a wide variety of problems that are innovative and unique.

CodeSignal is used early on in the interview process to assess software engineers's technical acumen, algorithmic knowledge and overall fluency in a specific coding language. The candidates generally get sent 2 to 3 questions to complete with a specific amount of time. Any candidate with a good score gets to continue the process where they will be further assessed by engineers.
  • Testing the skills and knowledge of junior engineers
  • Lets reviewers see what the candidates wrote while the exercise was happening and provides an indication of the candidate's thought process
  • In my opinion, UI is really bad
CodeSignal can be useful to help determine the knowledge of engineers on more theoretical topics.
In my experience, CodeSignal can be very useful for more junior roles, and in particular when you receive a lot of applications and you need to have more data points on candidates before deciding whether or not to move forward with more interviews

I use CodeSignal for technical interviews and coding interview practice. The product is beneficial for software engineers who want to brush up on their skills. Companies often send CodeSignal technical interviews to screen their candidates, and CodeSignal also offers services to allow users to complete practice questions on their websites.
  • Identifying industry needs.
  • Simplifying the interview process.
  • Providing a resource for job seekers.
  • the flexibility of learning plans.
  • The user profile should be optional.
CodeSignal is very well suited for the interview process. It streamlined the candidate experience and allows companies to manage their job applicants. I think it is less appropriate for use as a practice tool because there are alternatives that do it better. I think that CodeSignal is useful for students and employers.

I used it for a coding assessment for Roblox to test my coding skills. This helped Roblox to assess how much coding I knew and know whether or not I would be a good fit for the role based on their expectations for what a good candidate for the role could do.
  • Testing Applicants
  • User Interface
  • Questions for technical interviews
  • Checking for cheaters
  • User experience
  • Autocomplete features
It is well suited to coding assessments for software jobs especially those for students since they can be hard to assess since students can have similar profiles as they go to the same school for the same program so this helps to differentiate them from one another and assess them.

As a student in engineering, we had to conduct various labs. In the case of code signals, our operating system lab involved installing the program Keil vision which lets you program the board. I, like many other engineers, purchased an Apple Silicon computer recently. Because of that, native support for Keil did not exist, meaning I would have to remote into a Windows computer or do various other expensive options. Code Signals was a good mix where it was very affordable and a one-time purchase (without updates) and allowed me to complete the lab. I would highly recommend it.
  • Cheap.
  • One Time Purchase.
  • Maybe UI.
  • Have a clearer list of what apps work.
If CodeSignals has the app that you need on an Apple Silicon mac it's awesome. Obviously, if it doesn't you'll need to look elsewhere.

I currently use CodeSignal to prepare for my coding interviews since many big companies use this platform to conduct their own technical assessments. It is a great way to prepare since you have a real feeling of the experience, you get asked similar type of questions, get to interact with the interface and in addition to that, you have to complete within certain amount of time.
  • User experience
  • Provide real interview questions
  • Feedback on your results
  • Make discussion section
  • Have their questions divided into more sections
CodeSignal is very suitable if you want to experience what a real world interview is like under time pressure

My work does not require me to use CodeSignal. I have been using it to practice coding problems and prepare for my interviews. This has been useful for me to do a guided set of problems belonging to a coding category.
  • It has IDE, which helps you put debugging statements and run code which helps to find bugs or verify results when practicing coding.
  • It also has dedicated Java Spring-related questions that mimic what is being worked on in the real-world (Creating APIs etc.).
  • It definitely lets import/support more libraries than other coding platforms out there.
  • It needs to expand its use case to another actual working environment beyond Java and spring (not sure if it supports everything today).
  • The ones which have 3 or 4 questions to be completed within 1 hour is really bad for people who code in Java and provide a HUGE advantage to people who code in python.
  • Modify the question based on the language chosen; only then the time limit will make sense.
It is less suited for the case where one uses Java and has to deal with so much verbosity. Then it makes no sense to compare people who choose java with people who choose Python.

I used CodeSignal for an online assessment for a firm to that I applied for a summer internship. The platform was very good and user-friendly. It was very easy to navigate through the platform, and the questions were pretty good and required clarity of the concepts. It is a great platform that I will recommend.
  • User friendly UI.
  • Great questions.
  • Easy to use.
  • Compiler issues for problems.
  • Switch back to previous question.
  • Better editor.
Well, apart from the compiler issues, everything was great. I recompiled my answer for the test in my system, and it worked perfectly fine, passing all the test cases, whereas it gave errors in the compiler during my test. I had already completed that question, so I knew my answer was correct, but I had to waste too much time figuring out what was wrong with my code even though there was nothing wrong with it.

CodeSignal is the technical assessment platform that we use to hire new employees. The CodeSignal assessments are given as part of the interview process. We use CodeSignal to assess the aptitude in programming skills from the CodeSignal assessment score. As the score is generated on aspects such as the candidate's problem-solving ability and speed, the CodeSignal assessment serves as a good measure to judge a candidate before that person is called for the next round of interviews.
  • Option of proctored/unproctored assessment
  • Uniform structure of assessment
  • Variety of problem sets to choose from
  • Score certification process to check for malpractices
  • Code editor should be more responsive for auto suggestions
  • Practice environment should be located in such a way that it should be found easily
  • A transparent and publicly available pricing
- To conduct a preliminary assessment round when there are multiple candidates to choose from. Helps you to filter out candidates on the basis of requirements. - The questions that are assigned for each test are different, so the probability of any two candidates getting the exact same questions is very less. -However, the questions are based on the same concepts so as to provide an equal ground to all the candidates.- However, if you have to choose from less number of candidates you are better off conducting normal interviews, as these tests are time-consuming for both interviewers and employers.

Code signal is a very good tool to assess coding ability with data structures and algorithms of a potential employee. It gives an excellent review of the strengths of the applicant. The wide range of questions in the system tests people on a variety of different skills that might be needed and expected out of a software developer.
  • Easy assessment.
  • Rarely gives repeated questions.
  • Good rating after completing assessment.
  • Auto complete variables.
  • Auto complete commonly used syntaxes.
  • Reconnect on loss of internet sometimes gives issues.
CodeSignal is a very good tool to assess coding ability with data structures and algorithms of a potential employee. It is not well suited to test the reasoning behind their approach or to find out if the person knows what they are typing and if they understand why it works the way it works.

I have been using CodeSignal for almost 1 year. This is a great way to test your problem-solving and algorithm implementation skills. I started using CodeSignal when I applied for an internship and have been using it ever since. In addition to regular exams, we also offer algorithmic and data structure-based questions and data science modules. The coding environment is so stable and intuitive that most people can understand it without any problems. Numerous exercises to help improve your algorithm and data structure skills. The final assessment helps candidates track their progress by identifying their strengths and weaknesses. My coding abilities have vastly increased and continue to assist me in improving. It smooths down the screening process, and because the administered appraisals are verified by CodeSignal, the results of the evaluations are guaranteed to be accurate. Because of their verifiable experience, more people can be hired.
  • Organizing questions based on the implementation and data structures used.
  • Customer service and user interface are both excellent.
  • A diverse set of questions that is regularly updated.
  • Minimizes the number of candidates by screening through.
  • The platform should provide candidates with detailed feedback, allowing them to identify areas for improvement if necessary.
  • Furthermore, despite the fact that the assessment is complete, the platform prioritizes speed. In order to finish the assignment on time, people may be forced to forgo quality or desired output.
  • They should improve the question selection procedure, as some of the questions are too long to finish in the allocated time.
  • Hiring managers are not required to take part in programming reviews.
  • User interface and rich client services.
  • By filtering through, the number of candidates is reduced.
  • Organizing questions depending on how they were implemented and the data structures that were employed.
  • Both the customer service and the user interface are outstanding.
  • A broad assortment of questions that is updated on a regular basis.

Out of hundreds of people who apply to work at our company, CodeSignal assists us in identifying the best candidates. As far as I'm aware, it offers two types of examinations: general coding evaluations and data science assessments. We know the candidate's scores are legitimate because they are proctored and confirmed. In short, it saves time because we just have to interview a smaller number of individuals.
  • The test cases are quite well-written, and the grade we earn as a result of them is very fair. Users can use a unit testing tool to perform their own unit testing, allowing them to double-check their code before submitting it.
  • Intensive technical interview preparation
  • The online evaluation option is an excellent approach to assess candidates.
  • Simple UI for Simple Operations
  • There is no specific answer for the technical evaluation round. If I can't answer the question during this time, I won't be able to find a solution. A hint generator can be used to solve the problem and learn how to solve it at the end of the task.
  • I think the problem selection is a little haphazard; in a coding exam, the activities should be picked such that they can be completed within the time limit.
  • More interview question samples are needed.
It is advantageous and acceptable for applicants who are not fluent in some languages, such as myself. Students benefit greatly from companies that hire students based on their logical and problem-solving abilities. As a result, both businesses and students will benefit from it. Because there is no HINT feature for any issue, if I use it for study purposes, such as strengthening coding skills, and I am unable to solve the problem, it remains unanswered. With a suggestion or anything else, there is no way to solve this problem.

CodeSignal is helpful in sorting out the best candidates, out of hundreds of candidates that apply at our company. It provides two types of assessments, as far as I know, i.e. General Coding Assessments and Data Science Assessments. Since they are proctored and verified, we know that the candidate's scores are genuine. In short, it saves time, since we have to interview fewer candidates.
  • Technical Assessments
  • Grading the candidates on different categories of coding
  • Intensive technical interview preparation
  • Sometimes the difficulty levels of the questions asked are not properly distributed and would take significantly more time to complete
  • It doesn't provide us with solutions, after we have finished the assessments
  • It has a cooldown period of 14 days before you can take a proctored test again, which I feel is extremely long
It is best suited in scenarios where the main skill recruiter is looking for is data structures and algorithms. It might not be suited to evaluate someone with a lot of experience in the development field since sometimes, the technologies used in different companies are different. But I'd say the evaluation CodeSignal provides is very descriptive and detailed and I feel that it has made a huge impact on the overall speed of our hiring process.

We use CodeSignal to vet potential employees. It helps us figure out which candidates have a solid grasp of computer science principles and which ones need to brush up on their technical knowledge. This is crucial since coding habits differ and can have an impact as the project scales up to production.
  • Easy Operations with Simple UI
  • The test cases are extremely well written, and the rating we receive based on them is extremely fair. Users can perform their own unit testing with the use of a unit testing tool, which allows them to double-check their code before submitting it.
  • The online evaluation option is a fantastic way to evaluate applicants.
  • Need Some Improvement in Auto Complete Feature
  • A plagiarism check should be incorporated in the code.
  • More code questions per data structure would be great!
It is advantageous and acceptable for applicants who are not fluent in some languages, such as myself. Students benefit greatly from companies that hire students based on their logical and problem-solving ability. As a result, both businesses and students will benefit from it.

We use Code Signal to prepare for interviews for intern and full-time positions. We've spent a lot of time solving problems involving data structures and algorithms, which are crucial for any interview or assessment of any company. The puzzles on arrays, strings, linked lists, hash maps, and specific interview preparation material greatly aided us in cracking the interviews and attaining our dream jobs at our dream businesses. The preparation plan is highly extensive, and the programming questions are up to industry standards, allowing us to judge the complexity level of the challenges we might encounter during the interviews.
  • Clear problem description & Edge Cases
  • Candidate performance evaluation
  • LeaderBoard & Rewards
  • Company Interview Preparation
  • Better and Interactive User Interface
  • Stricter Proctored exam
CodeSignal is suitable for non-proctored as well as proctored online exams that need to accommodate a variety of languages. The user will feel at ease while completing the test because of the simple user interface, which includes features such as autosave, autocomplete, non-invasive timer, and tips. It is less suited in cases when companies wish to hire data scientists because a much more interactive test environment, such as Jupyter Notebook, is necessary. As a result, it is currently unsuitable for Machine Learning studies, however, this can be addressed.

  • Can expand into more areas other than development
  • Need to add problems for every level of developer
  • Can get more reach by providing special discounts.

We use Codesignal to hire engineers for our company. Codesignal allows us to screen candidates based on their coding abilities and helps to choose the right candidate. It gives a good estimate of the coding ability of the candidate as they might be solving similar questions in the test as one may solve in the company.
  • Competitive questions
  • Amazing user experience
  • Indepth result analysis
  • Speed is rewarded
  • Code design is given importance
  • Score evaluation should be standardized
  • Deadline to retest should be short
  • Will add more new questions
  • Test score should be valid for a longer period
Codesignal is best at evaluating candidates' analytical and coding skills. It is less appropriate for roles where coding is minimalistic. It's is best suited for software engineering roles and other areas while requiring coding assessments. Codesignal is the best platform that eliminates many levels and helps determine the candidate's testing ability.

I've been utilizing CodeSignal to solve coding assessments for many firms. Most firms who want to test a candidate's programming expertise use CodeSignal to perform Online Assessments. Using CodeSignal for several evaluations has made me appreciate the portal's basic and clean User Interface, which gives most users a favorable experience.
  • Great User Interface
  • Multi Language Support
  • Quality Problem-Solving Questions
  • Add frequently asked interview questions
  • Provide optimal solutions after the assessment
  • Improve auto-complete features
CodeSignal is ideal for online examinations that don't need to be proctored and need to support many languages. While taking the test, the user will feel at ease because of the straightforward user interface, which includes features such as autosave, autocomplete, non-invasive timer, and tips. However, in instances where firms want to hire data scientists, it is less ideal because a much more interactive test environment, such as Jupyter Notebook, is required. As a result, it is not well suited for Machine Learning experiments at the moment, however, this can be improved.

The organization primarily works on the data side dealing with big data. Typical assessment platforms are not sufficient in judging the skills in areas of data or in other areas as development or full-stack. I feel CodeSignal is a complete package that supports Jupyter Notebook integrations and makes it easy to test shell scripts knowledge, as it provides a Linux environment.
  • Jupyter Notebook
  • Linux environment
  • Collaborative editing
  • Better debugger natively without installation
  • Support for SRE assessment like Docker and Kubernetes.
  • Preconfigured environment and no need to install again and again
CodeSignal is well suited for scenarios where there are more collaborative and system design interviews. It supports multiple types of assessment like web development, algorithms, data structures, and Linux skills. It also offer Jupyter Notebook for testing. I feel it requires more maturity for machine learning assessment. I would like to see Google Colab integration.

As a student, I use it to help me prepare for technical interviews. I've provided several CodeSignal exams and believe they're really useful in predicting how you'd perform in a technical interview. Because the platform is incredibly informative and has a user-friendly layout, most of my peers utilize it for technical evaluations and interview preparation.
  • Great questions for Technical Evaluations
  • User friendly interface
  • Point system that pushes you to complete more problems
  • I suppose they should include a feature that allows us to know whether the recruiter who requested our technical evaluation opted to proceed with the interview process or rejected us and decided to move on.
  • I think they should provide more listings of frequently asked questions by popular companies.
  • They should at the very least provide a suggestion or a solution to the questions we couldn't answer during the technical evaluation. How are we meant to improve if you don't tell us how to do it even after the assessment?
There are many scenarios where CodeSignal is well suited such as technical assessments, interview preparations, and practicing our knowledge of data structures and algorithms. Although for some roles, the questions asked in technical assessments are irrelevant, since the role does not always require outstanding problem-solving knowledge. Hence in such cases, they should design a custom technical assessment that is specific to the role.

I did not use CodeSignal for my organization but I used it to prep for coding interviews. I found the feedback on the coding assessment to be very helpful. I like that assessments contain four questions instead of the typical two.
  • More feedback on coding problems

I am just a CodeSignal user, and I have been using CodeSignal to complete opening assessments for various software development companies.
  • Ease of use
  • UI Design
  • Transparency with how scoring works
  • Sharing coding scores
  • More granularity with score percentiles would be nice
  • Built-in programming language documentation so I don't have to worry about opening another tab and tripping the anti-cheat
  • For the sake of convenience make exams due at midnight instead of exactly 2 weeks from the test being sent out.
CodeSignal is a really good platform for taking programming assessments. It's hard to expand upon since the purpose of the software is really specific. I guess it would be interesting to see CodeSignal potentially expand out to proctored testing outside opening assessments for coding companies. For example, I could see CodeSignal being a better alternative to some of the proctoring software that is currently used in college for tests, given that it was adapted a bit for that purpose.

Testing was made very simple and clear. I knew exactly what to do and how to input my answers.
